The largest and most notable feature of the new Auto Union Type C was the ultra powerful V-16 engine. This 16 cylinder monster was installed right behind the driver to form the first mid engine race car. This abnormality became the norm shortly after the introduction of the Auto Union Type C.
The unique V-16 engine provided the Type C with 520 horse power. Back in 1936, this was a mind boggling number. Not only was the Auto Union Type C a superior piece of machinery at the time, it was also driven by a relatively unknown driver by the name of Bernd Rosemeyer. To everyone’s surprise, Rosemeyer would become a dominant driver and rise to the ranks of the elite in a very short time.
A Season of Dominance
The Auto Union Type C, driven by Bernd Rosemeyer, was able to end the racing dominance of Mercedes-Benz in the 1936 Grand Prix season. Notching three major victories in Grand Prix events, the Auto Union Type C with Rosemeyer at the wheel would go on to be crowned the Grand Prix Champion of 1936.
The Auto Union Type C was eventually lost to history. After World War II, the remaining Auto Union Type C’s were given to the Soviet Union as part of reparation payments. Till this day, no one knows what happened to them once they were turned over. All that remains of the Auto Union Type C is its impressive legacy and its innovative mid engine design, which has become the normal placement for moderns F1 races.
