Remembering Peter Cullen: The Voice That Taught Us What a Hero Could Be

Peter Cullen, the legendary voice behind Optimus Prime, passed away on August 26, 2026, at the age of 85. He leaves behind a career spanning more than six decades, but for millions of fans around the world, his greatest legacy will always be the voice of Optimus Prime.

But what makes his story so special is how that voice was born.

When Peter went to audition for Optimus Prime in 1984, he thought about his older brother, Larry, a Marine veteran who had served in Vietnam. Larry told him that if he was going to play a hero, he should be a real hero — strong, compassionate, understanding, and gentle.

Peter carried those words into the audition.

And from that moment, something extraordinary was created.

The voice of Optimus Prime was not simply deep or powerful. It carried dignity. Patience. Strength. Compassion.
