No other Ferrari has exerted such fascination as the 250 GTO from the 1960s. With its, an impressive classic appearance was born. Due to its sporting performance and distinctive elegance, the 250 GTO is now on almost everyone's lips as if it were a cult car.

In March 1961, the people at Ferrari became nervous. The reason for this was the upcoming presentation of a new Jaguar E-Type at the Geneva Motor Show. The car was considered a serious competitor and Ferrari was very concerned about its supremacy in motorsport.

Enzo Ferrari acted immediately and commissioned Giotto Bizzarrini to design a new GT class car. Bizzarrini chose to work with the 250GT/SWB, a model that had proven itself in rigorous tests. It was abundantly clear that there would be little, if any, change to the chassis, while the wheelbase would remain the same at 2,400mm. The resulting significant changes affected the rear axle, body aerodynamics and the center of gravity. In addition, an improved gear train was provided.

The car received homologation with the new type designation 250 GTO, where “O” stands for the Italian word “omologate” (homologated, certified). However, due to a well-publicized “internal coup” against Enzo Ferrari, several GTO designers, including Bizzarrini, had to leave the company. His successor was Mauro Foghieri, who got to work together with coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti and completed the development project. The new GTO had a breathtakingly beautiful body and was presented to the international press in Maranello in February 1962. The GTO's racing debut took place at the 1962 Sebring 12 Hours in the United States. His driver duo Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien won the GT class and finished 2nd overall. From then on the winning streak continued; Ferrari won the constructors' championship consecutively in 1962, 1963 and 1964. A total of 39 GTO vehicles were built, including three with a 4-liter engine.
